About Bellingham
Bellingham is located in the northernmost county of Washington state, Whatcom County, just twenty miles south of the Canadian border. The town’s economic boom started with coal mining; although industry shifted more into lumber milling in the 20th century. Now former industrial factories have been incorporated into mixed use neighborhoods on the sea front, particularly after a massive waterfront cleanup happened in 2017 to reverse the ecological impacts of the waste from earlier industrial activities.
From the sea front, the land rises quickly to almost 11,000 feet only 30 miles away at the summit of Mount Baker. Nestled in the shadow of this mountain is Lake Whatcom, which forms the eastern boundary of Bellingham. The city’s northern latitude means it is one of the only cities in the continental United States that experiences true astronomical twilight for two weeks in the middle of June each year.
